sallie

We are excited to launch a new pre-orientation program focused on first-generation and/or low-income students with programming grounded in research and experience. This will  be a three day program held off-site with programming on and off campus focusing on the unique challenges FLI students face such as:

  • Financial Aid
  • Student Financial Services
  • Financial Literacy
  • Academic Advising
  • Campus resources
  • Faculty and Staff Engagement
  • Community Building FLI and Beyond
  • LSP Scholars Seminar during the academic year

We believe that this cohort of students will begin their academic journey with a stronger sense of belonging and ownership of Stanford. By introducing the students to key faculty, staff, and resources prior to the beginning of classes they will feel empowered to attend office hours, programming and advising that is available.

Program expenses are covered except for travel to Stanford. Students are required to attend all three days of the program. Please plan to arrive by 6pm on  Saturday, September 14, 2019. Programming will begin Saturday evening and continue through the morning of Wednesday, September 18th when they will attend New Student Orientation Programming.

FAQs

The link to the application says I need permission. How can I get access to the form?

Use your Stanford Google account to access application! In order to keep the application focused on Stanford students, we have made the application open only to Stanford email addresses. Once you're logged into your Google account via your Stanford email, you should be able to access the application.

I will be participating in another FLI transition program (e.g. LSP, SSEA) this summer. Am I eligible to participate in FLI-SO as well?

We will be giving priority to those that were not able to participate in another program this summer. However, we may be able to accept students if space permits so we encourage you to apply!

ISO is happening at the same time as FLI-SO. Are international students eligible to attend FLI-SO?

Unfortunately, international students are required to attend ISO. However, our office will be hosting events for the general New Student Orientation that you are welcome to attend! These will be listed in the NSO schedule and we will be sending out email reminders as well! You can also stop by the office in Old Union 200 at any point to talk to either the admin or student staff and learn about the resources we offer.

How do you continue to support students throughout the year beyond FLI-SO?

  • The Stanford FLI Office offers many resources to FLI students throughout the year, including a mentor program, the Opportunity Fund, alumni engagement, and community building events. More information about these resources can be found on our website https://diversityandfirstgen.stanford.edu/.

  • You can also learn more about the FLI Office during NSO. These events will be listed in the NSO schedule, and we will be sending out email reminders as well.

  • Students will also have the opportunity to join the FLI Scholars seminar, a weekly seminar during Autumn and Winter quarters to continue building knowledge on how to navigate Stanford as a FLI student.

How can I get involved in FLI initiatives?

  • The FLI Office has a few student staff positions open. We will open applications at the beginning of the year. You can also join the student group FLIP (First-Gen and/or Low-Income Partnership) as a Frosh Intern and be involved in advocacy and community building for the FLI community.  The FLI Conference team will also be recruiting committee members for our second annual conference.

  • If you choose not to take on any of these positions, you are always welcome to attend events hosted by the FLI Office and FLIP and be a part of our FLamily! Our office is located in Old Union room 200 and you will often find FLI students here studying, having a snack, taking a nap, or just hanging out.
